At heart every smoker wants to stop.  Many of them are knowledgeable enough to know how, but cant quit the fags because the habit is too deeply ingrained.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A) What wont work?&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Gradually decreasing it.&lt;br&gt; Buddy, the nicotine wont let you quit.  It is too powerful an adversary and too cunning for you.  You will find the gradual decrement plan going fine, until the day you have an excuse to forget it (tension, overwork, circumstances, party etc.).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Depending on medicines.&lt;br&gt; Medicines only help to reduce the craving.  But seriously, do you smoke only when the urge hits you? Isnt it true that most of the time you smoke casually, whether there is a physical urge or not?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Talking continuously about it.&lt;br&gt; While you may think that it will help to keep the issue the uppermost in your mind, it will most probably lead to you being ridiculed in case you fail to quit.  Also, words being cheap, it will begin to sound like empty boast.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Nicotine substitutes.&lt;br&gt; These are substitutes.  They arent really the solution. When do you smoke maximum (with friends, alone, with drinks, under stress etc)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Number three, list down your reasons for a) smoking, and b) wanting to quit.  I am a big advocate of putting things down on paper.  It shows a commitment Number four, take someone into confidence.  A friend, a family member, a medical worker or, best of all, a sympathetic ex-smoker.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;These steps are keystones (preparations) for the big event.  The only thing is that the big event is not a one off.  It is a continuous obsession.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;2)  Back to basics&lt;br&gt; Now lets revert to the point A) above.  I was less than generous when I said definitely that these things wont work.  These things do help, specially reducing consumption.  Every cigarette less means approximately 5 minutes more to live.  Also, it helps to strengthen your resolve, which is the first step.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;You see, archaic though it sounds, Will is a sure shot solution.  So, unless you strengthen it, you will most likely fail. Why? - Remember that I said Will and NOT Will Power  They are different, 'Will Power' implies a struggle, where as using your Will, implies that its going to be easy.  Let me explain:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Do you need will power to smoke? NO&lt;br&gt; Do you need will power to eat your favorite Ice-cream? NO&lt;br&gt; Now to do one of the two above activities, is easy because it is your Will and NOT Will Power.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The steps in the wont work topic are generally the excuses that frequent relapsers offer.   But they are helpful in their own way.  What is important is not only the steps leading up to it, but maintaining the tempo once you have reached the crucial stage of ZERO cigarettes a day.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;3)  Penultimate stage  Quitting it By the time you have worked on stages 1 and 2 above, you would be feeling strong enough to risk quitting it. It seems like 99% of the articles I read on quitting smoking are written by someone trying to sell you something to help you quit.  Why is this?  Why can't everyone be honest about the whole idea of quitting smoking and just tell you that by the nature of being born you were given everything that you need to stop smoking.   If you are serious about quitting smoking, you can do it without spending a dime.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Before you begin to think that I'm completely full of crap, here me out.  I smoked at least a pack a day for close to fifteen years and walked away from smoking once and for all.  And I did it without spending one red cent, and there were no with drawls or any other negative effects.  I simply stopped smoking.  Were there times that I wanted a cigarette?  Of course there were, but I simply wouldn't have one.  I realized, during the stopping process, that it was normal for me to want a cigarette.  I mean my body was used to having one for God's sake!  A person will get used to anything after engaging in it for 15 years.  The bottom line is that I stopped and I know you can as well.  Below you will find a list of the things I found to be important in the process of quitting smoking :&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Changing Your Thinking&lt;/b&gt; - That's right, you need to change the way you think about smoking and quitting smoking.  Everyone tells you how difficult it will be.  Don't buy into that stuff.  Tell yourself that it's going to be as easy to quit as it was to start.  Remember this quote, "Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Change your surroundings&lt;/b&gt; - It was important for me to stay away from smoking (especially in the beginning).  I stopped going to places where everyone smoked.  I stopped hanging around smokers for long periods of time.  I stayed as far away from smokers as I could.  I even changed my job ( a job in which many people smoked).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Don't Believe The Hype&lt;/b&gt; - There is a ton of hype surrounding the act of quitting smoking.  Everyone wants to convince you of the fact that quitting is a difficult proposition.  I'm telling you from experience that it's not that difficult.  Quitting smoking will be as difficult as you "believe" it will be, it's as simple as that.  The hype is all designed to sell you something to supposedly make quitting easier.  All of the hype is nothing but a big sales machine.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Hopefully these tips help you kick the cancer sticks once and for all.  It really was that simple for me, and I know it will be for you as well.  What you believe is the key factor.  Remember what Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said of belief, "Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is." Whenever I see a reference to any brand of cigarettes in advertising or even in television and movies, I get really angry and remind myself exactly how much I hate the manufacturers and marketers of this deadly product.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Another technique I used and you can use too is to calculate how much money you have spent on cigarettes over the years.  In my case, 1.5 packs of smokes at $3 a pack means I spent about $4.50 per day for twenty years.  20 x 365 days equals 7300 days.  7300 days at $4.50 a day means I spent at least $32,850 on cigarettes.  Wow.  That is a lot of hard earned cash up in smoke.  Even thinking about that money now, six years after quitting I get angry and channel that angry to motivate me into never thinking about quitting.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As for nicotine replacement therapies, my choice was Nicolette gum.  The gum gave me the nicotine I craved without having to succumb to urges to smoke a cigarette and, it turns out, it is much cheaper than cigarettes. Wow.  That is a lot of hard earned cash up in smoke.  Even thinking about that money now, six years after quitting I get angry and channel that angry to motivate me into never thinking about quitting.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As for nicotine replacement therapies, my choice was Nicolette gum.  The gum gave me the nicotine I craved without having to succumb to urges to smoke a cigarette and, it turns out, it is much cheaper than cigarettes. A wakeboarder is a person towed behind a boat or a cable skiing lift at a speed of around 18-24 mph. The sport got more validation when World Publications launched its own publication, Wake Board Magazine, in 1993.  With each passing year, support for the Pro Wakeboard Tour and the magazine continue to grow.
